Inviting you and yours September 11th-13th for my 40th Birthday C&O Canal & Potomac River Adventure

My 40th birthday is coming up next month and to celebrate — instead of a
traditional party — Kate and I are organizing a 3 day overnight biking trip
beginning Friday, Sept. 11th through Sunday, Sept. 13th along the gorgeous
C&O Canal (pretty much my favorite non-work thing to do these days.) There
will be much healthy exercise during the day and a lot of fun by the
campfire at night. I will personally guide and host any one that would like
to come with us and I promise it will be extremely enjoyable.

You can join us for as much or as little of the trip as you wish on any of
the three days or for the entire trip. Bikes are recommended — though not
required — for this particular trip and you can go at your own pace the
whole way. This is also a kid-friendly adventure and anyone 8 or older can
go. There are free campgrounds every 5 miles or so on the trail so lodging
is simple and easy. I’ve enclosed full details below and a planning map of
the whole nature-packed, history-soaked trip is also attached.

I hope to see you there, we’ve done this many times over the last two years
and each time was considerable outdoor fun. Please don’t hesitate to let me
know if you have any questions of any kind or want help planning. If you
can’t make it, it’s not a problem of course and you can track what we’re
doing anyway if interested (details below.)

FULL DETAILS OF DION’S 40TH BIRTHDAY C&O CANAL & POTOMAC RIVER ADVENTURE IN SEPTEMBER 2009

This major adventure trip will be along the world-famous C&O Canal and the Potomac with water on at least one side of us at all times. Average temperatures at this time of year along the canal will be in the high 70s during the day while at night it’ll be in the high 50s, so it’s perfect for a longer trip like this one.

*** THE C&O TRAIL HAS FREQUENT CAR ACCESS POINTS, PLEASE JOIN US ANY TIME FRIDAY OR SATURDAY ****

The C&O Canal is one of the best maintained and longest bike trails in the world. It’s extremely relaxing and almost entirely flat route (the trail rises only at locks) currently goes for 300 miles from downtown DC in Georgetown up north continuously now to Pittsburgh due to the recent completion of the Great Allegheny Passage project. The trip, as I mentioned above, is a very idyllic one that is entirely along the water (usually the Potomac).

STARTING POINT: Brunswick, Maryland

We’re going to do a longer segment on this trip starting at the Visitor’s Center in the city of Brunswick at mile 55 and ride along the water up to Williamsport, Maryland at mile 100 by Sunday. The total distance for the three days will be 45 miles on firm gravel, or about 15 miles a day on average. So about 3-4 hours a day will be spent biking leisurely while taking in the great many sights and major landmarks on this segment of the trail (including Harper’s Ferry, Antietam, and many key civil war locations that took place right on the canal itself). We’ll be seeing — and often biking over or stopping at — canal locks, bridges, adeducts, rivers, picnic areas, river vistas, historical points of interest and much more.

Attached is a complete map of what we’re going to do. For this trip, we’ll pick the campsite that we like as we go along but it’s likely to be Dargan Bend or Antietam Creek (Night 1) and Killiansburg Cave or Opequon Junction (Night 2), see attached map for exact locations. The entire way along the whole ride is covered with small towns and scenic waterside views. While biking is the way to go (it’s gravel but road bikes work fine), you potentially have the option of hiking if you just want to catch up to us at one of the campsites, or even not hiking at all, just sleeping over. Please note that we might have to wait out a rain shower or two under a tree as well. This definitely means those who come must not mind getting a little wet and dirty, though the ride is mostly very comfortable indeed! We’ll also see a great many animals including water turtles, frogs, heron, rabbits, deer, fish, horses, and cattle. Fortunately, there should be few bugs by the time we hit the trail in September.

Mobile phone service is available the whole way, though it’s not always 3G. You can see what a typical bike camping campsite looks like here from a trip I did late last season, we do travel in style and bring the latest high-tech conveniences (including coffee maker, solar shower, laser light show, music, and more.)

*** WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO PICK US UP ON SUNDAY IN WILLIAMSPORT AT TONY’S PIZZA AROUND 2PM ***

Also note that is a true, self-contained wilderness adventure: We must take everything that we’ll need including all food, water (we bring a filter and there are many potable water pumps along the trail), tents, sleeping mats, sleeping bags, music, speakers, batteries, trash bags, solar panels, fire starters, snacks, and just about anything else you can think of including sunblock, GPS, first aid kids, complete spare parts, tools, and tubes for the bikes, cooking gear for 6 people, 3 lanterns, and much more. We even have comfortable chairs. All of this fits on our bike trailer (shown in picture in link above), but you will also have to carry a personal backpack with your effects (change of clothes and sleeping bag/blankets, toothbrush, comb, toilet paper, liquor, wine, any medication, etc.) We have extras of many things so let me or Kate know. I recommend that you purchase a pannier and a bag for your bike (~) even if you have a backpack. This will be required for your sleeping gear. Please get a hold of me if you’d like any help planning, we’ve done this many times and can help make sure you haven’t forgotten anything important since there will be only 1 or 2 chances to resupply.

The plan for a typical day is to ride a bit, explore the great many features of the C&O trail, enjoy nature, eat lunch in a town, find a good campsite, collect firewood, set up, slow cook food, listen to music, read, play, and watching stars (I’m bringing a really good electronic star map). As usual, I’m bringing lots of gadgets/toys for the kids too including movies and PSP games. Important: The goal is not to travel huge distances but to enjoy the trail and company.

**** YOU CAN CALL ME AT 202-538-0059 ON THE TRAIL SO WE CAN SET A RENDEZVOUS POINT IF YOU’RE GOING TO CATCH UP. ***

If you can’t make it and just want to come along virtually, we’re going to be posting pictures and video live on flickr.com/photos/dionhinchcliffe during the whole ride, you can check in us remotely throughout the weekend. You can also view the most recent overnight C&O trip we did last weekend with William and Seth.

*** PLEASE DO INVITE YOUR FRIENDS IF YOU LIKE. ***

Start: Meet at Brunswick Visitor’s Center in Brunswick (see map) the morning of September 11th as early as possible (or at any access point along the trail later in the day on Friday or any time on Saturday, please call first)
When: September 11th-13th, 2009
Finish: Tony’s Pizza in Williamsport, MD ~2PM EST. We’ll have a high-carb lunch at this inexpensive and great local place.
How Long: 3 days, pick up is Sunday early afternoon.
Trail Details: Mile-by-Mile Guide
Sights along the way:

* The Appalachian Trail is the same as the C&O trail just past Brunswick, so if you haven’t hiked the AT, now you’ll be able to say you did.
* The Antietam Battlefield. We may not actually visit it depending on time, but it’s close.
* Harper’s Ferry. We might go here for lunch or to resupply, terrific views of the Potomac.
* Sharpsburg.
* McMahon’s Mill. A very scenic mill that still operates on the C&O.
* Falling Waters. The place where the Confederate Army crossed the Potomac to escape the Union Army, greatly extending the war.
* Sheperdstown. A nice little burg with good food and restaurants.
* Williamsport. There is an incredible hands-on canal museum here for kids where they can build canals, operate a lock, and be a captain on a canal boat.

Other great C&O Canal facts:

* There are over 1,375 structures along the trail and five major habitat zones including 10 major bikeable aqueducts.
* The canal itself used to cross high over the Potomac in Georgetown and go into Alexandria. It did this with one of the world’s largest aqueducts, now replaced by the Key Bridge. An incredible view of what it was like.
* George Washington was the first person to rigorously map the Potomac and he was the one that originally suggested the canal. The canal became one of his dearest projects that he would ultimately spend his entire life on. He eventually became the president of the Powtowmack Canal Company after the revolutionary war, an early version of the canal that went as far as Great Falls.
* John Quincy Adams personally turned over the first spade of dirt for the full C&O Canal on July 4th, 1828 at Great Falls.
* Many claim the Civil War started at Harper’s Ferry, helped on by a C&O Canal lock keeper at Lock 33 named John Cook who fomented a slave uprising and spied on the south using his strategic vantage point along the canal. Note: We’ll actually see Lock 33 on this trip, where John Cook conducted his activites that eventually got him hanged by the south for treason.
* Abraham Lincoln was one of the presidents of the C&O Canal Company.
* For any of you "X-People" out there, the current record for biking the entire C&O Canal from Cumberland to Georgetown (185 miles) is 11 hours and 41 minutes held by Paul Gruenberger and Ralph Olinger set October 1994. This was a supported ride starting from Cumberland. Paul Gruenberger also claims the unsupported record time of 12 hours and 36 minutes set in September 1991.
* The C&O Canal trail has over 150 culverts to accommodate the streams and rivers it crosses, we’ll actually inspect some of the older ones since they are marvels of ornate 19th century architecture.
* After WWII, Congress tried to develop the canal and towpath as a parkway. However, the idea of turning the canal over to automobiles was opposed by some, including United States Supreme Court Associate Justice William O. Douglas (also the longest serving Supreme Court justice in history.) In March 1954, Douglas led an eight-day hike of the towpath from Cumberland to D.C. Although 58 people participated in one part of the hike or another, only nine men, including Douglas, hiked the full . Popular response to and press coverage of the hike turned the tide against the parkway idea and, on January 8, 1971, the canal was designated a National Historical Park by then President Nixon.

I think my expectations were probably too high, since I loved the first one on the PSP. I’ve played the original on the 360 as well as the PSP, and was impressed at how close they got to getting the look, feel, and actual gameplay of the console version into a handheld. Sure, there were minor differences, but they were trivial. I even loved X-Men Legends II on the PSP, so I was looking for something at least on par with those titles. Boy was I wrong. I’ve played about half of the PS3 version of Ultimate Alliance 2, and so far I like it a lot. Probably not as much as the first one, but it is still a lot of fun. The PSP version is actually a whole different game. The only thing it has in common with the PS3 version are the cut scenes. The levels and enemies are totally different, and not in a good way. One of the first things that caught me as being odd was that the enemies sort of float sideways in a fight, meaning that the animation is choppy. It also looks like the powers and leveling system are different as well. One other thing that was a let down was that after blowing up a vehicle, it just vanishes, where in the console version there would be an empty husk that you could pick up and throw. Come to think of it, I don’t remember being able to throw anything in this game so far. It’s depressing, because I was looking forward to playing as Blade and Psylocke, but I almost don’t wanna waste my time on it. I’m going back to the PS3 version for now, so if you really want a portable version and have already played X-Men Legends II and the original, keep an eye out for a used copy, because it’ll probably be mine. Definitely don’t pay full price for it.

Review by Shadow for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2
If you played and loved the first Ultimate Alliance on the PSP, don’t waste your time with this game. It seems that when they made the PSP version of this game, they took all of the good aspects of the series and stripped them away. It’s like you are playing a demo of a just announced game that still is in the works and therefore still needs a lot of work put into it. I will explain what I mean point by point.

In X-Men Legends 2 and Ultimate Alliance, if you went back to the home base for that act of the game, you were able to go to a device that would let you access bonus missions, see concept art you had unlocked, re-watch the amazing cut scenes you have unlocked, buy gear for your party, go back over your mission briefing, and even have some interesting conversations with some of the characters. And depending on who you had in your party you could get some really interesting reactions from the characters. And from early on in the game you gain the ability to teleport back to the base as needed. In Ultimate Alliance 2, you can only go back to the base between missions. But that makes sense to an extent since they completely removed the gear aspect of the game, so no need to waste your time in an action/RPG equipping yourself. There is no concept art to unlock. You can’t watch the cut scenes again, though for some reason you can go back and redo previous missions, though I have no idea why you would want to. There isn’t any real conversation between the characters. It all amounts to “here is another bonus mission to unlock someone else” or “go talk to the boss.” Riveting.

In Legends 2 and UA1 from any save point you could transport to any previously found save point or back to base. You could also change out your team and even change the costumes of your characters as you unlock them. And speaking of costumes, you had on average 4 different costumes for your characters in the end. Also, locked characters were usually unlocked by meeting some sort of in-game conditions, like find scattered items. With the PSP version of UA2 the save points serve no purpose beyond saving and changing your team. You can’t even change your costumes there. Know why? Now, I have heard with UA2 on the console systems that there are only 2 costumes for each character. That stinks, but ok. But with the PSP version, they completely removed the alternate costumes all together. And don’t worry about wasting your time finding those little items to unlock characters. In this release of the game you just wait until you are given a bonus mission for that character, get the second place prize for it, and they are unlocked. And speaking of characters, the selection is smaller than that of UA1.

And don’t let various web-sites fool you with their descriptions. They claim that you can join with your friends, either locally or over the internet. That is a lie. They removed the multi-player from the PSP version. They call it an action/RPG. This amounts to every time you level up you get to decide where to spend an ‘skill point.’ Don’t get your hopes up though, most of the time due to the level restrictions on increasing skills you will only have about one or two options of where you can put said point.

Oh, and if you want the game for the story, don’t bother. The sound quality is so choppy and bad most of the time that you won’t be able to understand what the people are saying, and in the few cases where there is subtitles to go with it, they are out of sync and disappear way to fast.

What happened? UA1 had a larger cast to choose from and 4 costumes per character that each had abilities that could be upgraded and you had gear you could equip to each character allowing for some simple but decent RPG elements. There were all kinds of things you could unlock, from finding bonus mission disk to concept art to items needed to unlock special characters. You could re-watch the beautiful cut scenes. And you could play with your friends. UA2: smaller cast, no costumes, no gear, nothing to unlock, nothing to find scattered throughout the levels, and no multi-player. All you have is the ability to redo previous missions. But with nothing to unlock, for the life of me I can’t imagine why you would want to waste one extra minute on this game. If this were the first game to come out, all of these problems might be acceptable. But after they did so much UA1, this is a total waste of time and money.

If all you have is a PSP I would recommend sticking with UA1 until you can buy a 360 or something and get a console version.

Graphics, game plot and everything is not bad. the game control is similar to UA1 but the response is so slow make it a pain to play. blocking is so almost impossible because the system always mistake that with using combined powers (L button). Also has serious lag in response.

If you love Marvel Ulimate Alliance on the PSP before you’regoing to like it now…IF you’re also a hardcore Marvel Comics fan. Compared to the MUA I (on the PSP), MUA II isn’t that good; shorter game play, no unlockable costumes, and certainly a lack of stroyline as compared to MUA I (and what the **** happen to the Galatcus stroyline?!!). As compard to the PS3 vbersion of the game, forget it…at least on the PS3 version you had graphics, coustmes, and longer gameplay if nothing else, but on the PSP, all you have is love of Marvel Comics and that’s why I bought it. So basically, if you ain’t into Marvel Comics (like Really into it) don’t waste your money.

I’m a fan of Marvel games. This game i will have to say is very fun. But, The game has a very slow frame rate. Meaning, there is so much going on that i think the game cant load all of it at once. The sound effects are a little low class, and the graphics are NOT up to date. I wouldn’t recommend this game if your a fan of clean cut and speedy graphics. Although, it is still fun and exciting if you look passed all that and don’t mind playing it with 60 frames per second. Have fun!!1
